The Bible, now featuring teen celebrities. Hmm...

A new audiobook series of the New Testament has been released called, "The Word of Promise Next Generation." Like other audiobooks, it's like listening to a dramatized story from a CD or MP3 player. The twist in this recording of the Bible is that it features the voices of several well-known celebrities.* These actors and singers provide the voices to Bible characters such as Jesus, Peter, John, Mary Magdalene, Matthew, and so on...

Some of the actors include Cody Linley (Hannah Montana, Dancing with the Stars) who plays Jesus, Jordin Sparks (American Idol 2007 winner) provides the voice of Elizabeth, Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) plays Peter, Emily Osment (Hannah Montana, Spy Kids) acts as Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Alyson Stoner (Cheaper by the Dozen, Camp Rock) plays Martha. Of course, more celebrities are involved in the production than those mentioned above.

It's no secret that many "young people," (as adults usually refer to us) find the Bible boring. Yes, this is sad. And yes, this is a problem. Thomas Nelson, Inc. is obviously doing something about it. The publishing firm is counting that youth will be more likely to be interested in hearing the Bible if its read by someone they know or even admire. Who knows, if paying celebrities to endorse products on TV commercials sells , maybe it'll work in spreading the word about Jesus and His soon return!

It goes without saying that the actors portraying the various Bible characters already have an established influence on the future customers. Let's just hope that the future actions of these actors won't contradict what they've been reading.

So whether you're rolling your eyes at having yet another product with Disney Channel actors on it or you're already downloading it, here's our suggestion for getting the best out of it: When listening to the recording, actually think of the story rather than the people reading it.

The Word of Promise Next Generation audiobook series is based on the International Children's Bible.
