Carson grew up in inner-city Detroit, in a single-parent home, with serious poverty, poor grades, a bad temper and a low self-esteem. His mom --who only had a third grade education-- pushed Carson and his brother to become the best that they could be through an education. (Adventist Review, 1/22/08) Benjamin is now a best selling author, writing over 100 neurosurgical publications and 3 best-selling books (he recently wrote a fourth book, Take the Risk). This guy's been awarded 38 honorary doctorate degrees and dozens national merit citations. (source). Carson, a member of the Spencerville Seventh-day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom back in 2008. (see our post about it)
Ben Carson is also well known for his work separating conjoined twins. He made history in 1987, being the first to successfully separate twins joined at the back of the head! Before, these types of operations had failed, killing both twins or only saving one! He has continued to successfully operate on more conjoined twins. Read about Dr. Ben Carson accomplishments here.
